Robert M. Woods, 94, of Davenport, Iowa, died Sunday, October 19, 2008 at his home.
Committal services will be held at 11:30 A.M. on Wednesday October 22, 2008 at Davenport Memorial Park. Those wishing to attend the service should meet at McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Home, Bettendorf by 11:00 A.M. on Wednesday.
Robert was born August 25, 1914 in Mendota, Illinois, the son of Guy & Sadie (Uline) Woods. He was united in marriage to Mary Huscko in 1936, Anna Mae Leonard in 1974 and Della Mae Parker in 1983. All three of his wives preceded him in death.
Robert entered the United States Navy in January 1944 and was a machinist’s mate aboard the USS Skylark which was sunk at Okinawa, Japan in April of 1945. He was honorably discharged at Roosevelt Base in Long Beach, California in October 1945.
Robert had owned and operated the former J & R Garage in Davenport. He had also been employed as a mechanic, pilot, heavy equipment operator and vending repairman. He retired from maintenance at Good Samaritan Center in 1980.
Those left to honor his memory include his daughters, Beverly (Paul) Burroughs, of Davenport and Cathy Olinger, of Moline; his sons, Joseph (Myra Stowe) Woods, of Davenport and E. Daniel “Woody” Woods of Hillsdale, Illinois; 25 grandchildren; 59 great-grandchildren; 40 great-great grandchildren; and his sister, Grace Hoyle, of Darien, Illinois.
Robert was preceded in death by his parents; his wives, Mary, Anna Mae, and Della Mae; his daughters, Mary Ann Anderson, Shirley Groves, and Linda Kay Woods; and several brothers and sisters.
