Roger Jon Morrell, 64, a resident of Davenport, Iowa, died on Sunday, April 2, 2006 at Genesis Medical Center, East Campus in Davenport.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M. Friday, April 7, 2006 at the McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Chapel, Bettendorf, Iowa. Burial with military honors will be held at Davenport Memorial Park. Visitation will be held from 3:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. on Thursday, April 6, 2006 at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the family for equal distribution to the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9128, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9128 Auxiliary and to cancer aid & research.
Roger was born on December 5, 1941 in Davenport, Iowa, the son of Thomas Leroy & Gladys P. (Christenson) Morrell Sr. He was united in marriage to Miona M. Madden on February 13, 1970 in Davenport, Iowa.
During the Viet Nam Conflict, he proudly served in the U.S. Marine Corps as a radio relay operator and was honorably discharged as a Corporal in 1966.
Roger was employed as a carpenter by Rock Island Integrated Services retiring in 2005.
He was a member and past-commander of the Veterans of Foreign War Post 9128 in Bettendorf where he served on the Honor Guard for many years. In addition, he was past-commander of the 2nd district of Iowa of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. His memberships also included the American Legion Post 154 of Bettendorf, the Disabled American Veterans and the Carpenter’s Union, Local # 4.
During his leisure time he enjoyed hunting, fishing & camping. He especially loved the times he spent with his grandkids.
Those left to honor his memory include his beloved wife, Miona; his daughter, Candy (Thorne) Stender & her husband, Brian of Overland Park, Kansas; his son, Anthony “Tony” Morrell of Davenport; his grandchildren, Anthony R. Morrell, Nicholas Morrell, Joshua Stender, Ashley Stender and Madisen Stender; and his special Marine friend, Donald Howe of Bering, Missouri.
He was preceded in death by his brothers, Thomas and Bruce; and by his parents.
