Roger L. “Swede” Nelson, 78, a resident of Bettendorf, Iowa died Friday, June 18, 2010 at his daughter’s home in LeClaire, Iowa.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M. on Tuesday, June 22, 2010 at the McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Chapel, Bettendorf, Iowa. Visitation will be held from 4:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. on Monday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Glendale Cemetery, LeClaire, Iowa. Memorials may be made to Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, Bettendorf, Iowa or Genesis VNA Hospice.
Swede was born July 12, 1931 in Home City, Minnesota the son of Arthur and Caroline (Gustafson) Nelson. He joined the United States Army in 1951 and served in the Korean Conflict. He was honorably discharged to the Army Reserves in 1953 at the rank of Sergeant. He was united in marriage to Marliss M. Bosek in Lowry, Minnesota on November 15, 1955.
Swede worked for many years as an owner/operator for various trucking companies, most recently for United Truck & Equipment, Milan, Illinois.
He was a life member of the VFW Post 828, Davenport, Iowa and the Moose Lodge of Davenport.
Those left to honor his memory include his wife, Marliss; his daughter, Tammy Nelson, LeClaire, Iowa; his sons, Kenneth J. Nelson, Princeton, Iowa and Joseph A. (Dawn) Nelson, LeClaire, Iowa; five grandchildren; his sister, Ardelle (Thomas) Muzik, Alexandria, Minnesota and his brother, De Wayne (Barb) Nelson, Alexandria, Minnesota.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one grandchild.
