Sammy K. Smith, Sr. 69, a resident of Davenport, died Tuesday, June 3, 2014 at UnityPoint Health Trinity Bettendorf.
Funeral services celebrating his life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, June 10, 2014 at McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Home in Bettendorf. Burial will be at Rock Island National Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. on Monday, June 9 th at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the family.
Born on October 23, 1944 in Hamilton, TX, Sammy was the son of Meredith Millard and LaVada E. (Askins) Smith. On October 25, 1967 in Muleshoe, TX, he married Carolyn Campbell.
Sammy worked as a Millwright for Alcoa for 27 years. Sammy proudly served his country in the United States Navy serving three tours during the Vietnam War. He was a member of the Vietnam Veterans of American post 776 in Bettendorf and was the former honor guard captain for the Vietnam Veterans of American post 299 in Rock Island. Sammy enjoyed fishing, smoking and gambling. He attended Faith Gospel Church in Davenport. Sammy cherished his time spent with family, especially his grandchildren.
Those left to honor his memory include his wife, Carolyn; daughters, Carolee (Brian) Lohman of Lowden, IA and Jannene (Steven) Lieferman of Davenport; son, Sammy (Erin) Smith, Jr. of Des Moines; step-daughters, Lorraine (Scott) Fields of Atoka, TN and Teri Jones of Bettendorf; step-son, Michael (Teresa) Dykes of Bettendorf; 14 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren; and a brother, Stanley Smith of Davenport.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
