Samuel S. Craig, 66, a resident of Rock Island, Illinois and formerly of Port Byron, Illinois died Wednesday, December 10, 2003 at his home following a courageous battle with cancer.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 P.M. Sunday, December 14, 2003 at McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Chapel, Bettendorf, Iowa. Burial will be in Glendale Cemetery, LeClaire, Iowa where military honors will be conducted. Visitation will be from 2:00 P.M. to 6:00 P.M. Saturday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Edgewood Baptist Church of Rock Island, the Rock Island County Humane Society or Pathway Hospice.
He was born March 18, 1937 in LeClaire, the son of Samuel Sherman & Vivian Grace (Shannon) Craig. On August 15, 1987, he was united in marriage to Sharon J. (Blunt) Clark in Lake Tahoe, Nevada.
Sam worked for the Alcoa Company for 31 years, retiring as a foreman in truck repair in 1989.
He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict and was honorably discharged in 1958.
His memberships included Edgewood Baptist Church, the Alcoa Retirees Club and the Buffalo Bill American Legion Post 347 of LeClaire.
Among the things he enjoyed were hunting, fishing and traveling. He was a meticulous woodworker and was a true “people person.” His family, especially his grandchildren (to whom he loved to tell stories) were the joy of his life. Sam will be sadly missed, but fondly remembered by those who knew & loved him.
Those left to honor his memory include his wife, Sharon; his daughters, Deanna Hlavacek & her husband, Kenneth of Bolingbrook, Illinois, Carolyn Craig & her husband, Mike Mavday of Palo Alto, California and Brenda Craig-Cherveny & her husband, Kevin of Wilmington, Illinois; his son, Bradley Craig & his wife, Tracy of Hanover Park, Illinois; his grandchildren, Melanie, Douglas, Thomas & Amanda Hlavacek, Cassie, Ally, Karleigh & Laney Cherveny and Erik, Joannah & Kelsea Craig; his step-son, Michael Clark & his wife, Sherry of Deerfield, Texas; his step-daughters, Jean Clark & her husband, Dave Roete of LeClaire and Julie Clark of Houston, Texas; his sisters, Jackie Hamer of Tawas City, Michigan, Grace Cathelyn of Moline, Illinois and Dottie Crotts of Rock Falls, Illinois; and his brothers, James Craig of Rock Island and John Craig of Abilene, Texas.
Sam was preceded in death by his parents.
