Sara J. Mahoney, 68, a resident of Bettendorf, Iowa died Monday, August 10, 2009 at the Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House, Bettendorf.
Visitation will be Thursday, August 13th at St. John Vianney Catholic Church, Bettendorf from 4:00-7:00 p.m. with a wake service beginning at 4 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday at the church. Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Davenport, Iowa. Memorials may be made to St. John Vianney Catholic Church or Genesis Hospice/Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House. McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Home is assisting the family with the arrangements.
Sara was born July 14, 1941 in Davenport, Iowa the daughter of George and Anna (Michl) Musal. She was united in marriage to James E. Mahoney on June 15, 1963 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, Bettendorf.
She worked outside the home at Woolworth’s, owned and operated The Cakery in Bettendorf for several years, and retired in 2008 after many years from the Bettendorf Schools Foodservice. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and homemaker.
She enjoyed camping and fishing at Cedar Bluff, Iowa and playing the slot machines on the river boats with her husband, Jim and her best friends, ‘Petra’ and ‘Big Bob’. She also enjoyed crocheting, gardening, baking and cooking. Her greatest enjoyment in life was spending time with family and friends.
Those left to honor her memory include her husband, James; her daughters, Teresa (Ray Burns) Sullivan of Colona, Illinois and Julie (Tom) Bender of Bettendorf; her son, Jeff Mahoney of Davenport; her grandchildren, Kimberly and Justin Sullivan and Cody, Sydney and Paige Bender; her sisters, Charlotte (Joe) Wright of Bettendorf, Suzie (Tom) Seymour of Bettendorf, Cindy Morris of Eldridge, Iowa, Doris (Gary) Cox of Bettendorf and Vicki (Ken) Davis of Bettendorf; her bothers, Joe (Debbie) Musal of Le Claire, Iowa and George Musal of Bettendorf and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother John, sister-in-law Sandy Musal, And Her Best Friend “Petra” Rinehart.
Sara’s family would like to extend a special thanks to the staff at the Genesis Infusion Center, Radiology department and the Genesis hospice/Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House for their love, care and compassion during Sara’s illness.
