Sherwood H. Anderson, 88, a resident of Davenport, Iowa died on Monday, April 25, 2011 at the Davenport Lutheran Home.
A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held at 10:30 A.M. Friday, May 20, 2011 at the Davenport Lutheran Home Chapel, 1128 W. 53rd St., Davenport, Iowa.
Sherwood was born July 25, 1922 in Calamus, Iowa the son of Harold & Ida (Hayes) Anderson.
On May 7, 1949, he was united in marriage to Mildred L. Gamber in Davenport.
She preceded him in death on May 25, 2007.
In 1943, Sherwood enlisted in the United States Coast Guard Merchant Marine at Kings Point, New York, and graduated from the Academy in 1944 with a degree in engineering.
He served aboard the USS Alcoa Trader.
He was discharged in 1943 at which time he enlisted in the U.S. Navy.
Sherwood served in the south Pacific aboard the USS General Sturgis and the USS Namakagon and upon his honorable discharge as a Lieutenant (junior grade) in 1946, he was awarded the Asiatic-Pacific Theater Ribbon, the World War II Victory Medal, the American Area Campaign Medal and the Good Conduct Medal.
He continued serving his country in the United State Naval Reserve and retired as a Lieutenant Commander in 1982.
He received his Bachelor of Science degree from St. Ambrose University in Davenport in 1952 and became an Emeritus Club member of St. Ambrose in 2002.
Sherwood was principal of Buffalo High School for three years.
He taught industrial arts, math and science at Edison School in Rock Island for 26 years, retiring in 1982.
He also coached wresting and basketball and was the adult education coordinator for Blackhawk College from 1966 to 1981.
After retirement, he joined the Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) and volunteered his time teaching woodworking at the Handicapped Development Center in Davenport and assisting others at CASI in preparing their income tax returns.
Sherwood was an avid golfer and worked part-time as a starter at Emeis Golf Course and Duck Creek Golf Course.
He loved to play cards, especially cribbage and bridge.
He was a long-standing member of The American Legion Post 26, Davenport, Iowa.
Those left to honor his memory include his grandchildren, Jenelle of San Diego, California and Josh (Christine) Anderson of Corpus Christi, Texas; and their mother, Beth of Galveston, Texas; his great-grandson, Alexander Mark Anderson; his sister-in-law, Shirley (Bob) Schneider of Davenport; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his wife, Sherwood was preceded in death by his sons, Scott in 1997 and Mark in 2001; and his brother, Bruce (Lois) Anderson.
Memorials may be made to the Davenport Lutheran Home or Trinity Lutheran Church of Davenport where he was a member.
McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Home of Bettendorf is assisting the family with arrangements.
