Shirley A. Dixon, 81, a resident of Bettendorf, Iowa died Thursday, September 23, 2004 at her home following an extended illness.
Private family services will be held the McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Chapel, Bettendorf. She will be laid to rest in the Ames City Cemetery, Ames, Iowa. There will be no visitation. Contributions in her memory may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.
She was born April 15, 1923 in Joliet, Illinois, the daughter of Claude & Sarah (DeClercque) Adams. On June 24, 1945, she was united in marriage to Howard R. Dixon in Joliet.
Shirley retired as secretary to the Assistant Registrar at the University of Iowa in Iowa City. In early years, she worked as a secretary for the Farm Bureau in Joliet.
She dearly loved the Bix Biederbeck Music Festival, was a member of the Catfish Jazz Society and a member of the QC Plus-60 Club. In addition, Shirley enjoyed attending the many varied programs at the Bettendorf Public Library and was an avid reader as well. Her family was the focus of her life and attending her children’s school & recreational activities were a priority throughout the years. Many years ago, as a teenager, she was an active member of the Rainbow Girls in Joliet.
Those left to honor her memory include her beloved husband, Howard; her daughters, Susan Dixon and Sharon Teager & her husband, Bill; her grandchildren, Sara Dixon, Nathan Teager & Kaitlyn Teager; and her sister, Valerie Jacques & her husband, Bill of Joliet, Illinois.
Shirley was preceded in death by her son, James Howard Dixon; and by her brother, Claude “Buddy” Adams.
