Stanley Franklin Clinton. 95. A resident of Heritage Court in Davenport, Iowa died on Sunday, October 21, 2012 at the Davenport Good Samaritan Center.
A service to celebrate his life will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Friday, October 26, 2012 at Asbury United Methodist Church of Bettendorf where he was a member. He will laid rest at the Rock Island National Cemetery where military honors will be conducted. Visitation will be from 10:00 A.M. to 11:00 A.M. Friday at the church. Memorials may be made to the Honor Flight.
He was born on July 30, 1917 in Abingdon, Illinois, the son of Ralph & Verna. On September 22, 1942, he was united in marriage to Amelia Verna Bickel in San Francisco, California. She preceded him in death on February 28, 2004.
Stanley taught physical science from 1948 to 1982 at the Frank L. Smart Junior High School and the Williams Junior High School, both of Davenport. He was a graduate of Iowa Wesleyan University of Mt. Pleasant, Iowa and earned Master’s degrees from the University of Illinois in Champaign, Illinois and Highlands University in Las Vegas, New Mexico.
He was a U.S. Army-Air Corps veteran and served with the 22 nd Troup Carrier Squadron in the South Pacific during World War II. He achieved the rank of Major during his service and upon his honorable discharge in 1946, he was awarded the Asiatic-Pacific Service Medal, the American Theater Service Medal and the Philippine Liberation Medal.
Stan was an accomplished athlete and loved to play tennis in earlier years. He also enjoyed running track and playing football.
In addition to the church, he was a member of the Davenport Educational Association, the National Educational Association and the Iowa Wesleyan Alumni Association.
Those left to honor his memory include his daughter, Sharon (Kevin) Jones of Davenport; his son, Jeffrey (Deborah) Clinton of Davenport; his grandchildren, Jonathan (Caryn) Clinton, Andrew Clinton and Elizabeth Jones; his great-grandchildren, Amelia & Hunter; and his niece, Karen Burton.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Harlan and Raymond; and by his infant sister, Helen.
