Stanley Schutter

d. October 31, 2012

Stanley George Schutter, 92, a resident of Bettendorf, Iowa died on Wednesday, October 31, 2012 in the very home where he was born many years ago.

A service to celebrate his life will be held at 11:30 A.M. Monday, November 5, 2012 at the McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Chapel in Bettendorf.  He will be laid to rest at Pleasant Valley Cemetery.  Visitation will be from 1:00 P.M. to 6:00 P.M. Sunday at the funeral home.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Buffalo Bill American Legion Post 347 where he was a member.

He was born in Bettendorf on December 25, 1919, the son of Albert & Edna (Schaefer) Schutter.   He was united in marriage to Mary Arlene Cochrane on November 24, 1943 in St. Louis, Missouri.  They were happily married for sixty-eight years until Arlene passed away on April 6, 2011.  Stanley & Arlene enjoyed life on the farm and loved to dance.

He served in the U.S. Army in the mountains of Burma and China during World War II, packing artillery on mules for the MARS Infantry.

Stan farmed with his wife in Pleasant Valley for many years.  Farming was a hard life.  He farmed with his mother when his father passed away at which time Stan was only 16 years old.  It took him a few more years to pass high school as farming consumed his summers.

Onions were the primary crop in the Valley, but he also had livestock.  Stan was the last onion farmer in the Valley.  He cut back, but never quit.  Even at age 92, he still mowed his own grass and drove his car.  In earlier years, Stanley was a member of the Pleasant Valley Volunteer Fire Department.

Those left to honor his memory include his son, John (Kathy) Schutter of Bettendorf; his grandchildren, Michael (Jeanne) Schutter, Laura (Andrew) Emig and Travis Purdy, his great-grandchildren, Tommy Schutter and Dylan Emig; his sisters-in-laws, Patricia Sturms of Davenport and Beatrice Eads in Florida; his special friends, Debbie, Curtis & Trevor; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and wonderful friends.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his twin daughters, Karen & Kathleen; his daughter, Jane in 1985; his daughter, Nancy in 2000; and his sister, Jeanette Messer.
