Suellen A. Kernan, 72, a resident of Princeton, Iowa died Wednesday, March 13, 2013, at Genesis East Medical Center, Davenport after an extended illness.
A time of remembrance will be held from 11:00 A.M. to 1:00 P.M. on Saturday, March 16, 2013 at the McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Home in Bettendorf. Following the visitation, the family invites you to join them for food & fellowship at Boll’s Community Center in Princeton.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Sue Kernan Memorial Fund, 2421303 at Valley Banks, Quad-City locations for women needing assistance to pursue higher education. Sue was born in Chicago, Ill., to Irv and Lucille French. She grew up in Baraboo, Wisconsin and later Bettendorf, Iowa, attended the Villa de Chantal, Rock Island and graduated from Immaculate Conception Academy, Davenport and attended Marycrest College. She earned an associate’s degree from Brown Mackie College in 2012.
She worked at the family business, the El Rancho Motel and El Rancho Villa Restaurant in Bettendorf and later owned Kernan’s Riverview Restaurant in Princeton with Mike Kernan and family. She was employed at the former Davenport Osteopathic Hospital and worked in the food brokerage, service and retail industries for many years.
Sue, (aka “Bill”, “Grawma Sue”, “Grawma Old”, “Gramoosie” and “Suzy Q”) loved her family, friends and the boat rides on the river and when the three were combined she was most happy. She was an avid card player and had a great sense of humor. Sue enjoyed trips to Wisconsin Dells, Mexico and Florida and enjoyed her favorite show, “Dancing with the Stars!”
She married Don Seitz in June of 1960 and they started a family. In 1972, she married Mike Kernan in Bettendorf, Iowa.
Sue was devoted to her family and grandchildren and worked tirelessly supporting them. She is survived by Mike Kernan; her children and their spouses, Chuck (Diane) Seitz of Princeton, Iowa., Tami Seitz (Steve Judge) of Davenport, Iowa., Kevin (Jennifer) Kernan of Princeton, Iowa., Sean Kernan of Davenport, Iowa and Amy Kernan of Davenport, Iowa; her grandchildren, Stephanie Seitz, Chris Seitz, Megan Parkin, Alexa “Betty Bum Crack” Parkin, Maisey “Fuzzy” Kernan and Chuey-the-dog. She was preceded in death by her parents.
