Susan Wessels

1943 — January 1, 2020

Susan M. Wessels, 76, went home to heaven on May 5, 2020 in Davenport, Iowa with her husband, Jack at her side. They have been married 48 years.

Susan, “Grandma Sue” or “Pastor Sue” to many, will be missed greatly.  Sue loved God and her family, and supported all of those that she could with her kindness, generosity, and wisdom.

Sue, a life learner, became a licensed United Methodist minister in 1977 and achieved her Master of Divinity in 1986 and her Master of Theological Studies in 1987 from Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary.  It was her joy to serve as pastor at Carbon Cliff United Methodist Church from 1977 - 1987, West Ridge United Methodist Church in Chicago from 1988 - 1993.  Prior to her retirement to Osage Beach, Missouri in 2006, she served for 13 years as pastor at Trinity United Methodist Church in Yorkville, Illinois.

Sue loved her family and cherished her time with each of her children - Sandy Flynn, Willie Wessels, and Wade Wessels and their spouses.  They remain her hope and her legacy.  Sue’s seven grandchildren and great-granddaughter will always know her love and her passion for family and education.

She was blessed to have shared much of life with her sisters, Patt Plunkett and Ginger Paton, their spouses, and her 2 nephews.  Many will continue to honor Sue’s memory, including her 4 stepsons and their families (13 children and grandchildren).

Per her wishes, cremation rites have been accorded and a memorial service will be held at a later date with inurnment at the Alpha Cemetery.

Memorials may be directed to the Tribute Scholarship at Garrett-Evangelical in memory of Sue Wessels.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Max and Agnes Plunkett and her grandparents, Carl and Beulah Voorhees.
