Tako "Mama" Sharoian, 96, a well-known and long-time resident of Bettendorf, Iowa peacefully passed away at her home on Friday evening surrounded by her beloved family.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M. Tuesday, September 30, 2003 at McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Chapel, Bettendorf. Father Basil Papanikolaou and Father Peter Pappas will officiate. Burial will be in Oakdale Memorial Gardens, Davenport. Visitation will be from 2:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. Monday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Genesis Hospice or the Ronald McDonald House Charities of the Quad-Cities.
She was born May 22, 1907 in Moush, Armenia. She was united in marriage to Mike Sharoian in Constantinople, Turkey. In 1921, she arrived at Ellis Island in New York where she was reunited with her husband and they eventually made their way to Bettendorf. Mike preceded her in death on April 21, 1937.
In early years, she was employed at the former M. L. Parker Department Store in Davenport and was the housekeeper for the Oakley Tyler family in Davenport for 16 years. For over 50 years, she & her family owned & operated the Arrowhead Tavern on State St. in Bettendorf. In addition, she cared for her father-in-law, Joseph Sharoian until his death at age 99.
Her memberships included the Armenian Relief Society and St. George the Illuminator Armenian Apostolic Church in Granite City, Illinois. She was an active participant in the International Folk Festival in Bettendorf for many years and also loved to travel. “Mama” loved to cook for her family & many friends and will always be fondly remembered by those who knew & loved her. Her home was always a haven of friendship and love to all who entered.
Those left to honor her memory include her daughter & son-in-law, Mary Jane & Jasper Perry of Las Vegas, Nevada and her daughter, Sandra J. Mohr of Davenport; her son-in-law & his wife, Dr. James E. & Donna Murray of Henderson, Kentucky; sixteen grandchildren; thirty-one great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson and Also honoring her memory are Art & Elsie Tatoian who thought of "Mama" as a mother; and her long-time and very special friend, Thelma Ehredt of Riverdale, Iowa.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her daughters & sons-in-law, Deba Sharoian, Alice Murray, Alma & James Geary and Gary Mohr; her sons & daughter-in-law, George "Ossie" Sharoian, John Sharoian and Joseph & Marge Sharoian; and her parents.
