Thelma L. Kankel, 81, a resident of Morton, Illinois and formerly of Davenport, Iowa died Tuesday, April 12, 2005 at the Brandonwood Retirement Center in Morton.
Memorial services will be held at 10:30 A.M. Saturday, April 16, 2005 at the McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Chapel, Bettendorf, Iowa. Burial will be private. Visitation will be from 9:30 A.M. to 10:30 A.M. Saturday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospitals.
She was born March 5, 1924 in Webster City, Iowa, the daughter of Frank J. & Lydia Mae (Clabaugh) Johnson. In 1963, she was united in marriage Gerald “Bus” Matthews in Davenport. He preceded her in death in 1973. In 1976, she was united in marriage to Morris “Sandy” Kankel in Davenport. He preceded her in death in 1979.
Thelma was employed in the “Bacon Room” at Oscar Mayer & Co. in Davenport, retiring in 1979 after 17 years of service.
She enjoyed doing jigsaw puzzles, was a fan of John Wayne movies & collectibles, loved country & western music and in earlier years, had many wonderful times fishing in Wisconsin.
Those left to honor her memory include her daughter, Donna Corrigan of Peoria, Illinois; her granddaughters & their husbands, Tere & Curt Bakker of Evansville, Indiana, Deb & Sam Auliff of Princeton, Iowa, Shelly & Doug Jones of Litchfield Park, Arizona, Kathy Palminsano of Urbandale, Iowa and Angela & Bruce Marston of Peoria; thirteen great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild expected in May; and many nieces & nephews.
In addition to her husbands, she was preceded in death by her sisters, Evelyn and Leona; her brothers, Cecil, Everett and Donnie; and her nephew, Carroll Johnson.
