Thomas Beck

Thomas George Beck, 68, passed away peacefully from an extended illness in the home that he re-built on Saturday, December 17, 2022 in Bettendorf, Iowa.

Tom was born May 14, 1954 in Utica, New York to George H. Beck and Vivian J. Day. As a child, Tom moved many places following his father’s job, where he met many friends along the way.

Tom settled in Bettendorf, Iowa after meeting the love of his life at the Valley Inn in Pleasant Valley, Iowa. Laurie (Lory) and Tom were married on June 25th, 1983. Tom and Laurie (Lory) enjoyed snowmobiling throughout Wisconsin and traveling as a young couple.  The two were each other's lifelong companions, best friends and were inseparable. They were blessed with two children; Gary and Ashley.

Helping others was something that Tom never said, “No” to. He was always a phone call away to his friends and family and there for his kids in a heartbeat. Tom was a true hero to many as he volunteered at the Pleasant Valley/Bettendorf Fire Department for about seven years. He also had a kind spot in his heart for all his beloved pets that he treated like family.

Tom was a hardworking man who spent 38 years working at Alcoa (Arconic). He enjoyed his time there and gained more than just co-workers, but lifetime friends instead. Leaving Alcoa was hard, but it left more time for doing what he loved most. He had a true passion for working in his garden, four o’clock beer time with Harry and Theresa (in-laws), jamming to the Rolling Stones, yard projects, spending time with family and the neighborhood pool crew, remodeling, and building things in his beloved shop. Tom was known around holidays for his delicious food, barbecue and announcing the fourth of July with his cannon.

Tom is survived by his wife and life partner; Laurie (Lory) Beck, children; Gary Beck, Ashley Holle and son-in-law Tyler Holle. He was also so incredibly excited to announce he was going to be a grandpa coming in March! He is survived by brother, Greg Beck and niece, Megan Van Wychen.

He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Vivian Beck and brother, Gary H. Beck.

There were many heroes in Tom’s life as well. A great big thank you to all the Genesis doctors and the visiting, radiology, hospice and the intensive care unit nurses who helped with Tom’s care.

Tom will be remembered for many things, but especially for his fun, and yet sincere personality and great laugh. A true representation of Tom will happen at his celebration of life on January 28th from 4:00-7:00 p.m. at the Valley Inn in Pleasant Valley, Iowa. Flannel shirts will be appropriate and appreciated in true Tom Beck fashion.  Memorials may be directed to the University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital in Iowa City, Iowa.
