Thomas E. Doering Sr., 76, a resident of Davenport, Iowa died peacefully on Monday, June 20, 2011 at Genesis Medical Center, East Campus in Davenport with his family at his side.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 6:30 P.M on Thursday, June 23, 2011 at Our Lady of the River Catholic Church of LeClaire, Iowa. Visitation will be from 3:30 P.M. to 6:30 P.M. Thursday at the church. Private family graveside services will be held at Pleasant Valley Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to any environmental or educational cause. McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Home of Bettendorf is assisting the family with arrangements.
He was born February 4, 1935 at Ft. Madison, Iowa to Edmund & Zelda (Bullard) Doering. Tom married Darlene Rubens in 1974.
Tom was a high school principal in Greeley, Iowa and later taught at Wilton and Pleasant Valley. He was an instructor for many years in the Davenport Adult Education Night School Program and was also instructor at the John A. Logan College in Illinois. Tom had served as a “critic” for teacher training programs for five colleges and universities. Following his instructional career, he owned & operated a motel and banquet facility in Marion, Illinois. He then spent 16 years as a civilian employee of the U.S. Army at the Rock Island Arsenal before his retirement.
Tom was active in scouting, civil rights and various conservation groups. Among the things he enjoyed were meeting new people, gardening, fishing, spending time in the great outdoors, the Mississippi River, reading, politics, traveling, toy trains, warm winters in Florida and his beloved Green Bay Packers.
Those left to honor his memory include his wife, Darlene; his sons, Tom (Sandi) Doering of LeClaire and John (Jean) Doering of Indianola, Iowa; his step-daughters, Darcy (David VerWoert) Schmitt of Davenport, Amy (Dave) Necker of DeWitt, Iowa and Gina Smith of McKinney, Texas; his step-son, Brian Rubens of San Francisco, California; eleven grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.
Tom was preceded in death by his son, Charles Doering in 1992 and his first wife, Suzanne in 1973.
