Troy E. Smith, 27, a resident of Davenport lost his brave battle with aplastic anemia on Thursday, January 27, 2005 at University Hospital in Iowa City. He underwent a bone marrow transplant on September 17, 2004.
Funeral services will be 2:00 P.M. Monday, January 31, 2005 at the McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Chapel, Bettendorf, Iowa. Burial will follow at Mount Calvary Cemetery, Davenport. Visitation will be held from 2:00 P.M. to 5:00 P.M. Sunday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the family.
Troy was born March 10, 1977 in Davenport, Iowa. He was united in marriage to Nicole Ortiz on January 12, 2005 in Iowa City, Iowa while a patient at University Hospital.
He was employed as a cook at Harlan’s Restaurant in Davenport.
Among the things he enjoyed were spending time with his family, especially his son, nieces and nephews, playing basketball, golfing, fishing, and playing video games.
Those left to honor his memory include his wife, Nicole Ortiz-Smith of Davenport; his parents, Mary & Gary Castel of Davenport; his son, Jaylen Clayburne; his sisters, Serena Smith of Bettendorf, Lita Serrano of Davenport and Koresa Serrano of Davenport; his brother, Justin Manning Serrano of Omaha, Nebraska; his grandmother, Ellen Hurt of Davenport; and his beloved four nieces and three nephews.
Troy was preceded in death by his grandfathers, Paul Gernandt and Howard Hurt.
They family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the nurses and staff of the Adult Bone Marrow Unit at the University of Iowa Hospital for all of their care and concern.
