Vierlyn Jean Speaker Roskens, 86, of Bettendorf, Iowa, passed away unexpectedly at home on July 21, 2023.
Visitation will be from 4:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. on Wednesday, July 26th at McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Home. A family graveside committal service will be at Davenport Memorial Park Cemetery on Thursday, July 27th. A celebration of life service will follow at 11:00 A.M. at Asbury United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dr. Thomas Carver officiating. Vierlyn was born in Primghar, Iowa to Larry and Sadie (Stewart) Speaker on June 30, 1937. She graduated from Primghar High School in 1955 and from Iowa State Teacher’s College in Cedar Falls, Iowa in 1957.
She was a second-grade teacher at Lake Mills, Iowa where she met her husband. She married Jerry Roskens on June 5, 1959, in Primghar, Iowa. They moved to Bettendorf in 1963 where she raised her three children and later worked as a preschool teacher for a number of years, positively impacting many little lives.
She was an active member of the Asbury United Methodist Church for 60 years and was active in a number of volunteer efforts, including service to her church.
Vierlyn is preceded in death by her husband; her parents; her brother, Chuck Speaker; and brothers-in-law Jim Roskens and Les Kiel.
Vierlyn is survived by her children: Val and Stephen Tews; Larry and Lisa Roskens; and Ted and Mary Roskens; her sisters-in-law: Kristi Jons, Jean Kiel, and Della Vander Broek; 9 grandchildren: Kaitlin and Anthony Rohlik, Joshua and Rachel Lubben, Michaela and CJ Maddox, Jes Roskens, Bekah and Zane Kuehn, Nate Roskens, Alan Bush, David and Claudia Roskens, and Dani Roskens; and 8 great-grandchildren: Shayden Maddox; Zaviar, Royston, Kierlin and Quaed Rohlik; Raelyn Kuehn, Ezekiel Kuehn, and Michael Roskens.
Memorials may be given to the Bettendorf Food Pantry.
She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
