Walter C. Glunz, 92, a resident of Eldridge, Iowa died on Monday, July 1, 2015 at the Clarissa Cook Hospice House in Bettendorf, Iowa following a brief illness.
A service to celebrate his life will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Tuesday, July 7, 2015 at Faith Lutheran Church of Eldridge, Iowa where he was a charter member. He will be laid to rest at Davenport Memorial Park where military honors will be conducted by the Eldridge American Legion Post #639. Visitation will be from 3:00 P.M to 7:00 P.M. on Monday, July 6, 2015 at the Chambers Funeral Home of Eldridge. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Faith Lutheran Church.
Walter was born in rural LeClaire, Iowa on May 28, 1923, the son of John and Frieda (Marxen) Glunz and attended Scott County Schools.
During World War II, he entered the U.S. Army where he saw combat in France and was hospitalized for many months before his honorable discharge in 1945.
On November 16, 1956, he was united in marriage to Arlene Kuhl at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Davenport.
He and his brother, Eldon owned and operated E. & W. Glunz Trucking Company of Eldridge for many years. He later went to work as a mechanic at the Caterpillar Plant at Mt. Joy, Iowa where he retired in 1985. Walter had also served on the Eldridge city council from January 1962 to October 1971.
In addition to the church, he was a member of the Eldridge American Legion Post 639. In his leisure time, he loved to go fishing and enjoyed playing golf. His beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren were a joy in his life.
Those left to honor his memory include his wife, Arlene; his sons, Daniel (Michelle) Glunz of Long Grove, Iowa and Richard (Shelby) Glunz of Port Orchard, Washington; his grandchildren, Clint (Erin) Glunz of Rochester, Minnesota, Kara (Tim) Hamann of Walcott, Iowa, Erika Glunz and Alison Glunz, both of Port Orchard, Washington; his great-grandchildren, Kollin and Riley Hamann, both of Walcott; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and wonderful friends.
Walter was preceded in death by his sister, Bernice Anderson; and his brothers, Eldon Glunz, Melvin Glunz and John Glunz.
