Walter E. “Wally” McCormick, Jr., 98, of Davenport, died Thursday, August 30, 2012 at St. Mary Healthcare & Rehabilitation Center in Davenport.
A service to celebrate his life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 1, 2012 at McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Home in Bettendorf. The family will meet with friends from 10:00 a.m. until the time of services on Saturday. Burial with full military honors will be at Fairmount Cemetery in Davenport. A memorial has been established in his memory.
Born on March 30, 1914 in Muscatine, Wally was the son of Walter E., Sr. and Violet P. (Skeels) McCormick. He lived in Davenport most of his life. Wally served his country in the United States Army from April 1945- December 1946 and was assigned to the 808 engineer aviation battalion in Tokyo, Japan.
Wally was a construction and carpenter worker and in his earlier years worked for J.I. Case Company. He was a member of the American Legion Post 26 of Davenport. Wally enjoyed reading, travel, mathematics and photography.
Those left to honor his memory include his sister, Shirley Woodford of Long Grove and many nieces and nephews; special friends, Mark and Sharon Mink of Eldridge and Donna Pencil of Davenport
He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Phyllis Elmore; five brothers, Roy McCormick, Stanley, Daniel, Franklin “Corky” and Don J. Hartley.
