Wanda Arlene Smith, 95, a resident of Bettendorf, Iowa passed away on Saturday, November 20, 2021, at the Clarissa Cook Hospice House in Bettendorf.
Visitation will be from 12:00 P.M. to 1:00 P.M. on Wednesday, November 24th at the McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Home in Bettendorf. Graveside services will be held at 1:30 P.M. Wednesday at the Rock Island National Cemetery.
Wanda was born in Cincinnati, Iowa on December 5, 1925, the daughter of Cletus and Hazel (Kinser) Hickman. Wanda was employed as a clerk for the Rock Island Railroad for more than 25 years up until her retirement.
She was united in marriage to William “Bill” Scott Smith in Kansas City, Kansas in 1944. He preceded her in death in 2011. Together, they were married 67 beautiful years and had three wonderful children, Mary Lou and twins, David and Linda.
Wanda enjoyed playing cards with her friends at the Community Center in Bettendorf and morning breakfasts at the local McDonalds where many knew her and Bill well. Together, she and Bill enjoyed traveling the country in their Minihome, spending many winters in Apache Junction, Arizona. Wanda also enjoyed needlepoint and cross-stitching, her daily newspaper puzzles and cheering on the Chicago Cubs. Wanda and Bill greatly cherished their grandchildren with whom they spent many weekends fishing, traveling to Adventureland and hosting countless birthday parties celebrating their love for each. Family was very important to Wanda and the time spent over the years attending family gatherings, dinners and holiday celebrations was of utmost importance to her and created heartfelt memories for all.
Those left to honor her memory include her daughters, Mary Lou Coon of Bettendorf, Linda (Bill) Weatherly of Bettendorf; her son, David Smith of Davenport; six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her sisters, Vesta Slavens and Karmel Ann “Katie” Meyer, and her infant brother, Richard Hickman.
