Warren A. Smith, 81, a resident of Bettendorf, Iowa died on Sunday, September 16, 2007 at the Clarissa Cook Hospice House in Bettendorf.
His funeral service will be held at 10:00 A.M. Friday, September 21, 2007 at the McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Chapel, Bettendorf. Burial with military honors will take place in Davenport Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 5:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Clarissa Cook Hospice House, the Bettendorf Veterans of Foreign Wars or to the Bettendorf American Legion.
He was born in Bettendorf on October 26, 1925, the son of Clarence Everett & Angeline (Wilhelm) Smith. On June 12, 1948, he was united in marriage to Imogene M. “Jeanne” Stuart in Rock Island, Illinois. She preceded him in death on April 27, 1984.
Warren was employed as an accountant and sales coordinator with Nichols-Homeshield of Davenport, retiring several years ago. Following his retirement, he worked part-time for Mid-West Publishing. In earlier years, Warren was employed by Wonder Bread and the Peter Pan Bakery.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army with the 99th Infantry Division in Ardennes (the Battle of the Bulge), Rhineland, central Europe and at the Remagen Bridge. Upon his honorable discharge in 1946, he was awarded the Bronze Star Medal, the Presidential Unit Citation (2), the Good Conduct Medal, the Belgian Unit Citation (2), the European Theater Ribbon with 3 Bronze Battle Stars, the American Defense Medal, the Occupation Medal and the World War II Victory Medal.
Warren graduated from Davenport High School in 1944 where he was class vice-president and attended the University of Iowa where he served in the U.S. Air Force ROTC program and later in the U.S. Air Force Reserves.
Many will remember Warren as an avid bowler. He was a member, past-president and inducted into the Hall of Fame of the Iowa State Bowling Association and member, past-president and inducted into the Hall of Fame of the Greater Davenport Bowling Association. In addition, he was a member and past-secretary of the Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge 28 of Davenport and a life-member and past-publicity chairman of the Delta Chi Social Fraternity.
Those left to honor his memory include his daughter, Marsha ((Roger) Garrow of Davenport; his sons, Larry (Mary Ellen) Smith of Cincinnati, Ohio and Stuart (Becky) Smith of Bettendorf; his grandchildren Andrew (Elizabeth), Erin, Megan (Shawn), Michelle, Samantha and Mathew; his great-grandchildren, Jack, Ben, Ryan Elizabeth and Tyler; and his sister, Kay Crouch of Memphis, Tennessee.
In addition to his wife, Warren was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Lisa; and by his parents.
