Wayne C. Gass, 73, a resident of Princeton, Iowa died following a brave battle with cancer on Wednesday, June 8, 2011 while camping with his family at Calamus, Iowa.

A funeral service to celebrate his life will be held at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, June 11, 2011 at the McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Chapel in Bettendorf. Burial with military honors will take place at Jack’s Cemetery, LeClaire, Iowa. Visitation will be from 4:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. Friday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the family.

He was born November 1, 1937 in Leonor, Illinois the son of Charles & Kathryn (Ringer) Gass. On March 21, 1992, he was united in marriage to Joyce V. Burkamper in Princeton.

Wayne was a graduate of Alleman High School in Rock Island, Illinois and served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1957 to 1959.

He worked at the Wonder Bread Company of Davenport, Iowa retiring in 1997 after 39 ½ years of faithful service.

Wayne & his wife enjoyed camping, playing golf, traveling and spending time with family. He was a member of the Moose Lodge, the Honor Guard of the Veterans’s of Foreign Wars Post 9128 of Bettendorf and a past member of the Princeton Lions Club.

Those left to honor his memory include his wife, Joyce; his daughters, Christi Sawyer of Calamus, Iowa and Dawn Rosenbohm of LeClaire; his son, Kevin (Deb) Morey in Texas; his grandchildren, Justin Rosenbohm, Danika Sawyer and Mitchell Sawyer; his sisters-in-law, Bev Beuse of LeClaire and Ida Marie Burkamper of LeClaire; his brothers, Ron (Sue) Gass of Burgess, Illinois and Larry (Margie) Gass of Silvis, Illinois; his sisters, Diane (Ron) Druecker of Strawberry Point, Iowa and Karen (David) Jones in Ohio; and his daughters, Cheryl (Brian) Goode & family in Texas and Michelle (Bill) Holcomb & family in Florida.

Wayne was preceded in death by his parents, Charles & Kathryn Gass; his friends & brothers-in-law, Dick Burkamper and Don Beuse; and his special black Lab, “Heidi.”

The family would like to express their heartfelt thanks to the Heartland Hospice and all their staff for the compassionate & loving care shown to Wayne & the family during his illness.
