Wendy S. Schmertmann

Wendy S. Schmertmann, 44, a resident of Bettendorf, Iowa died on Wednesday, August 5, 2009 at the Clarissa Cook Hospice House in Bettendorf following a courageous battle with cancer.
A service to celebrate her life will be held at 2:00 P.M. Saturday, August 8, 2009 at the Bettendorf Christian Church where she was a member. The family will greet friends from 12:00 P.M. to 2:00 P.M. Saturday at the church. Contributions in her memory may be made to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
She was born in Davenport, Iowa on April 28, 1965, the beloved daughter of Bob & Jackie (Whipka) Deere. On May 23, 1987, she was united in marriage to Kent M. Schmertmann in Bettendorf.
Wendy graduated from Pleasant Valley High School, earned her Bachelor’s degree from the University of Northern Iowa and her Master’s degree in special education from the University of Houston (Texas) Clear Lake Campus.
Her career in elementary education began in Houston where she taught for 7 years and later at Jefferson Elementary School in Davenport, Iowa where she taught for 13 years.
Her husband, children and family were the joy of her life and she dearly loved being a teacher. Wendy was active in sports in school and enjoyed watching her children participate in sports as well. Traveling was another favorite activity of Wendy’s.
Those left to honor her memory include her husband, Kent; her children, Andrea, Chad & Alex; her parents, Bob & Jackie Deere of Bettendorf; her brothers, Mark (Mindy) Deere of Phoenix, Arizona and Jeff (Dallas Clark) Deere of Dallas, Texas; and her grandparents, Netha Deere of Bettendorf and Gene & Lillian Sullivan of Davenport.
Her grandfather, John Deere preceded her in death.
The family would like to express their heartfelt thanks to Dr. Constantinou & his staff and the wonderful staff at the Clarissa Cook Hospice House for their compassion and care shown to Wendy during this difficult time.
