William LeRoy “Bill” Case, 89, a resident of Mesa, AZ, formerly of Bettendorf, died Sunday, November 24, 2013 at his home in Arizona.
Funeral services celebrating his life will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, November 29, 2013 at McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Home in Bettendorf. Burial will be at Rock Island National Cemetery. Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. until the time of service on Friday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Alzheimer’s Association or the Davenport Police Association.
Bill was born on November 24, 1924 in Bettendorf, the son of LeRoy and Elsie Mae (Thompson) Case. On October 4, 1952 in Davenport, he married Barbara Belle Elvidge.
Bill served his country in the Army Air Corp during World War II from 1943-1945. He was a side gunner on a B-24 Liberator aircraft in the 8 th Air Force Bomber Group, stationed in England. Bill was involved in many battles in northern France and central Europe including Normandy and Rhineland. He was awarded the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Ribbon with five bronze battle stars, adorned with three oak leaf clusters.
Bill was a police officer on the Davenport Police Department for 32 years. He also drove for Enterprise Rent-A-Car for three years. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed riding motorcycles. Bill was a member of the American Legion Post #26 in Davenport.
Those left to honor his memory include his wife, Barbara; daughter, Linda Christine (Steve) Shafer of Mesa, AZ; two grandchildren, Mike and Matt Shafer; two great-grandchildren, Ethan and Grace Shafer; and a cousin, Betty Ann Gibbs of Davenport.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Jeffrey William Case; one grandson, Curtis Shafer; three sisters, Dorothy, Marguerite and Virginia; one brother, Howard; one brother-in-law, John Bentley.
