William Paul Flenker was born on December 20, 1929 in Dixon, Iowa to Roland and Adeline (Meyer) Flenker. When he was 1 year old, his family moved to what is now the family farm near McCausland, Iowa.   He graduated from DeWitt High School in 1948 and served in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict.

William was united in marriage to his high-school sweetheart, Mary Twigg on June 23, 1953 in Davenport, Iowa and was honorably discharged from the army in 1955.  Upon discharge he and Mary returned to the family farm near McCausland, Iowa where he continued to farm with his wife, children and grandchildren until his death.

Bill’s greatest joy and what he believed to be his greatest accomplishment was his family.  Bill never missed an event that his children were in and always put his family and their needs first.  He was always quick to act and lend a helping hand if anyone was in need – always believing that each person could make a difference if they got involved.

He was proud to be a veteran with Armistice Day having a very special meaning for him that he liked to share with his family.   Community minded, Bill was the first to show his support for McCausland whether it was for a new community center or saving the post office. He firmly believed and liked to tell others that McCausland had the best volunteer fire department around.

He was a man of great faith and integrity and felt the closest to God on his farm working the land, working with livestock and working beside his family.  An optimist and visionary, he always believed that the best was yet to come and that teamwork could accomplish anything.

Bill was a member of Faith Lutheran Church in Eldridge, the American Legion and the Masonic Lodge all of which he belonged to for over 50 years.  He also served as the Butler Township Clerk, was a past Director of the McCausland Volunteer Fire Department, McCausland Telephone Company and Central Scott Telephone Company and served on the church council and as a board member of the North Scott Athletic Boosters.

He is survived and lovingly remembered by his wife of 61 years, Mary, his children Kim Flenker of Princeton, Iowa,  Kevin (Corinne) Flenker and Meg Flenker all of McCausland;  his grandchildren Nick (Melissa) Flenker, Kelly (Darin) Wernke, Nathan (Angie) Flenker, Kourtney (Lucas) Johnson, Kalvin Flenker, and Grant Flenker; his great-grandchildren Brooklynn, Bryce, and Brock Flenker, and Charlotte Flenker, and his faithful cairn terrier, Alex, who could always be found at Bill’s side, and many times, much to Bill’s chagrin, right under his feet.

Preceding Bill in death were his parents, sister and brother-in-law Arlene and Herb Peters, and niece Susan Thomsen.  May they all rest in peace.
