William Grimes

William Joe Grimes, 76, of Bettendorf, Iowa, passed away on Wednesday, January 8, 2020 at Senior Star at Elmore Place in Davenport, Iowa.

A Memorial Service to celebrate his life will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, January 13, 2020 at Bettendorf Presbyterian Church in Bettendorf.  Visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the services on Monday at the church.  Burial will follow at Rock Island National Cemetery.  Memorials may be made to Bettendorf Presbyterian Church or to the Alzheimer’s Association.

Joe was born February 5, 1943 in Albia, Iowa, the son of Richard Hillis & Wilma Eva (Cozad) Grimes.  He was united in marriage to Doris J. Leedle on June 30, 2001 in Davenport.  Joe served in the United States Army from 1965 to 1967 as a radio operator serving in the Special Forces.

He was retired from Alcoa and was a member of the Veteran of Foreign Wars.  Joe enjoyed bowling and golf and especially enjoyed yardwork.  He received many compliments on his yard over the years.  He also loved the company of his grandchildren and his dachshunds, Gunner and Gretta.

Those left to honor Joe’s memory include his wife, Doris; his sons, Brian Grimes of Moline, Illinois, Brad (Shannon) Grimes of Tama, Iowa and Keith (Augusta) Grimes of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; his step-daughter, Teresa Leedle of Bettendorf; his step-son, Gregory Leedle of Bettendorf; his grandchildren, Riley Grimes, Alexanderia Leedle, Brittany Leedle and Isaac Leedle; his brothers, Gary (Connie) Grimes of Newton, Iowa, Hoyt (Jill) Grimes of Newton, Dwight Grimes of Newton and Randy (Pam) Grimes of Utah; his sisters-in-law, Ilene Grimes of DeWitt, Iowa, Liz (Mike) Freds of Michigan, Mary (Lewey) Laws of Marshall, Michigan and Karen (Gary) Church of Leesburg, Florida; his brothers-in-law, Larry Hazel of Marshall and Doug (Sharon) Hazel of Coldwater, Michigan; and a special niece, Debra Laws of Marshall.

Joe was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Dean Grimes; his sister-in-law, Jeanette Grimes; and his brother-in-law, Jerry Hazel.
