William J. “Bill” Weis, 87, a resident of Bettendorf, Iowa died on Sunday, November 13, 2016 at the Iowa Masonic Health Facility in Bettendorf.
A service to celebrate his life will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Friday, November 18, 2016 at the McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Home in Bettendorf. He will be laid to rest at the Rock Island National Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. on Thursday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Honor Flight of the Quad-Cities.
He was born in Dubuque, Iowa on February 9, 1929, the son of Harold and Mildred M. (Mahoney) Weis and was a graduate of the former St. Ambrose Academy in Davenport, Iowa. On August 26, 1950, he was united in marriage to Mary Lou Smith in Davenport. He was later united in marriage to Garnett Carter on August 27, 1978 in Bettendorf.
During the Korean Conflict, he served with the 25th Infantry Division in the U.S. Army. Upon his honorable discharge as a Sergeant in 1952, he was awarded the Combat Infantry Badge, the United Nations Service Medal with one Overseas Bar and the Korean Service Medal with one Bronze Star.
Bill was employed as Parts Manager at Lujack Schierbrock Chevrolet of Davenport, Bob Eriksen Chevrolet of Milan, and Warren Chevrolet of East Moline.
Bill's passion was his yard. It had to look picture perfect. He enjoyed bowling, a good shot of bourbon, a cold beer, and the companionship of his beloved dog, "Sadie". In recent years he built a great camaraderie with Bob Fitts and the rest of the Quad City Korean War Vets chapter. Bill was able to enjoy an Honor Flight which was an experience of a life time.
Those left to honor his memory include his wife, Garnett, his daughter, Penny (Mike) Fisher of Bettendorf; his sons, Ron (Jane) Weis of Bettendorf and Steve (Roberta) Weis of Davenport; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and his brother, Gene (Marianne) Weis of Bettendorf.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his step-father, Al Schaffer; his step-son Gary Carter; and his granddaughter, Kimberly Fisher.
