William "Bill" Thomas

William “Bill” James Thomas, 89, a resident of Bettendorf, died Wednesday, October 25, 2017 at the Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House in Bettendorf.

Funeral services celebrating his life will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, October 30, 2017 at McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Home in Bettendorf. Burial will be at St. Mary’s Cemetery in East Moline. Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m.  – 1:00 p.m. prior to services on Monday. Memorials may be made to the Genesis Heart Institute.

Bill was born on September 14, 1928 in Detroit, Michigan, the son of Edward and Marguerite (Huxford) Thomas. He served his country in the United States Navy from 1948 – 1950. On August 27, 1949 he married Jacqueline Lang. She preceded him in death in 1969. On September 12, 1970 in Galesburg, Illinois, he married Gwili Coffman.

Bill worked at the International Harvester Farmall Plant in Rock Island, retiring in 1980. He enjoyed golfing, antiquing, traveling, camping, the outdoors, watching John Wayne westerns, and his pets.

Those left to honor his memory include his wife, Gwili; daughters, Pamela (Ferdinand) DeVoss of Arlington Heights, Illinois, Donna (Mike) Winkler of Davenport and Lynn (Kathie) Sprout of Champaign, Illinois; sons, Paul (Sue) Thomas of Moline, Michael (Susie) Leight of LeClaire, William (Renee) Thomas, Jr. of Davenport, David (Amiee) Thomas of Spring Grove, Illinois and Gary (Kristopher) Thomas of London, England; 25 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren, and 4 great-great grandchildren; and a brother, Scott (Faye) Thomas of Spring Hill, Florida.

In addition to his first wife, Bill was preceded in death by his parents.
