Sidney Arthur Pelo left this world peacefully at home surrounded by his family on Tuesday, July 11, 2006 at the age of 87.
A Memorial Service will be held on Monday, July 17, 2006 at 2:00pm at the Tanglewood Pavilion Chapel in Bettendorf. A Celebration of Life Service will immediately follow at the Tanglewood Pavilion until 6:00pm. Memorials may be made to the family. Honorary Pallbearers are Dan Pelo, Scott Rocker, Zach Rocker, John Haigh, Marty Guilfoyle, Mike Walker, Brian Kilstrom, Scott Gillies, Patrick Gerst, and Mike Hathaway.
Sidney was born on November 4, 1918 in Pleasant Valley, Iowa to Arthur and Anna Pelo. Sid graduated from Davenport High School in 1937. He married his wife Arline R. Lamp on December 15, 1946. Sid was the first walking route carrier for the city of Bettendorf. He transferred to the Rock Island post office to work in Customer Service. He retired in 1975 after 37 years in Postal Service. Sid worked several part time jobs during this time such as; "Sid's Cleaners" with his wife Arline, Plaza Bowl as a bartender, and assisted at Iowana Dairy Farms.
Sid enjoyed many outdoor activities. He was an original member of the Thuenen Oilers softball team. He loved gardening and always looked forward to the annual "Big Tomato" contest held at Knights Inn in Bettendorf. He was an avid fisherman and bowler and loved to play cards with his family and friends. Sid spent much time in Necedah, Wisconsin as a child and passed on much of his fishing and camping knowledge to his children and grandchildren. He especially enjoyed traveling to Florida with his wife Arline in their RV, ("The Unit") to Holiday Cove in Bradenton, Florida where they would vacation in the winter months. Sid enjoyed the friendships he made with other vacationers from around the country.
Sid is survived by his wife Arline; brother, Gordy Pelo of LeClaire, Iowa; sons, Dan Pelo of Bettendorf and Scott Rocker (Joyce) of Pleasant Valley; daughters, Debra Guilfoyle and Diane Haigh of Bettendorf; 9 grandchildren; and 5 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents Arthur and Anna Pelo.
